This Video is called "Through The Wire" and is taken from Kanye West's album College Dropout. The song is about him recovering from his near fatal car accident. It samples Chaka Khans hit single "Through The Fire". The whole video was financed by Kanye and he used ideas for the video from an Adidas Commercial. The music video was directed by Coodie and Chike and it premiered in November 2003.

Purpose Of Music Videos

Sound films first arrived in 1926, this was the beggining of a huge trade in music television. After 60 years of live music performances on terristrial television in 1981 on August the 1st MTV was born, a cable television channel dedicated to music videos.

Music videos are primarily used to promote the artist and increase sales on the artists album. Usually the more spent on a video the bigger it becomes promoting the artist more therefore making more money back. If an artist is on a big label like Sony BMG for example the videos usually have a high budget and become big on music television channels like MTV. A good example of a high profile music video is Michael Jackson's 14 minute mini-movie for the hit single Thriller. Michael spent a million dollars on this video and really showed the world his true dancing & acting skills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtyJbIOZjS8

Entertaining music videos help raise the profile of the artist. Good backing dancers, a story to the video, expensive cars, clothes, jewellery; all of these things make the artist look more appealing and therefore more people will enjoy the video aswell as the music.

A good video is always created by a good director, some high profile video directors are: Chris Cunningham, Hype Williams and Coodie & Chike. If the video is directed by someone as high profile as one of these directors you can almost guarantee it will be a hit.
